Discovery® C18 HPLC Column, 5 µm – Supelco by Merck
The Discovery® C18 HPLC column from Supelco by Merck is a high-performance reversed-phase column designed for reliable and reproducible separation of a broad range of analytes. Built on a high-purity, spherical silica platform with a C18 octadecyl bonded phase, the column delivers excellent peak symmetry, low silanol activity, and consistent retention behaviour across routine and complex sample matrices. The endcapping process minimises residual silanols, reducing tailing of basic compounds and improving column-to-column reproducibility.
With 12% carbon loading, a surface coverage of 3 µmol/m², and 300 m²/g surface area, the Discovery® C18 provides strong hydrophobic retention and good selectivity across a wide range of compound polarity. The 180 Å pore size ensures good mass transfer for small molecules, and the operating pH range of 2–8 accommodates both acidic and buffered mobile phase systems commonly used in pharmaceutical and food analytical workflows.
The column is certified suitable for USP L1 methodology and carries a metal impurity specification of less than 10 ppm, supporting analysis of metal-sensitive compounds. The 10 cm × 2.1 mm dimension is additionally suitable for LC/MS applications due to its narrow-bore format and compatibility with low-flow MS-compatible mobile phase conditions.
